2017 was an exciting year here at ReluTech. We became an AWS Premier Consulting Partner (one of only about 25-30 in the world) and our team had the opportunity to help our clients in more ways than ever before. We grew our Cloud Migrations, DevOps and Data & Analytics practices to over 60 AWS-certified professionals, achieved APN competency status for Microsoft Workloads and capped off the year with a great week out in Las Vegas at AWS’ re:Invent, which included our Chief Solutions Architect, Adam Book, placing second in the AWS Hackathon. The driving force behind all of this growth and success has been our people. The ReluTech Talent Delivery team has been responsible for building our team of Cloud Architects, DevOps Engineers, Big Data Architects and Project Managers who are leading the various enterprise technology initiatives we’re implementing with our clients. They’ve also helped many of our clients build, expand and optimize their own world-class technology teams.

With that in mind, here is an overview of what we predict will be 2018’s major technology hiring trends:

1. The huge demand for Cloud Automation and DevOps talent will continue to rise well ahead of the growth in supply: Cloud migrations, infrastructure automation, complex deployment automation and site reliability were major drivers of innovation in 2017. As such, having fully-staffed Cloud and DevOps teams has now become a matter of critical importance. In 2018, Cloud/DevOps roles will continue to be among the most difficult to fill due to the increased demand and limited talent pool. If you’re looking for high-end, niche automation expertise as most companies are, expect to pay at the highest end of salary ranges for those types of roles. We expect top DevOps Engineers to command between $125,000 to over $200,000 and strong Cloud Architects between $135,000 and $200,000.

2. The demand for skills related to Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning will rise dramatically: It became clear in 2017 that AI, Machine Learning, and Data Science have the potential to make a MASSIVE impact across a number of industries and we’re only at the beginning. Anticipating this trend to continue, many educational programs have expanded to help current data science experts develop their knowledge around these newer skills by offering additional coursework and certifications to add machine learning algorithm expertise to their already in-demand skills. We expect the demand for these skills to dramatically rise as companies look to integrate innovative solutions, software and products into their goals for 2018 and beyond.

3. Cybersecurity roles will become the #1 hiring priority in 2018: 2017’s high-profile, major cybersecurity breaches resulted in PR nightmares, financial disasters and a loss in customer trust for a number of major companies. Due to the elaborate, sophisticated nature of these attacks, we predict that cybersecurity skill sets will become the #1 hiring need in 2018 as companies look to prevent attacks to their consumer data, internal networks, and other at-risk entry points. We expect this to be even more pronounced for IoT companies due to the increased risk of cybersecurity breaches in that specific space.

Between these three trends, companies will pay a premium in 2018 for highly-specialized niche talent as demand continues to outpace supply for professionals with skills in DevOps/Cloud Automation, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Cybersecurity. At-risk enterprises needing to protect their valuable data, devices, and networks from threats will make big investments in their cybersecurity teams while companies wanting to be at the forefront of innovation will hire for AI, Machine Learning, Data Science and Cloud/DevOps skill sets on both a contract and full-time basis.
